The McGuires purchased a German Shepherd pup who turned out to be very active. The McGuire household was a busy one, and the pup was constantly barking and getting in the way. They took her to training class and tried to be patient, but finally admitted that this pup was making them crazy. They started looking for a good home for her. Eventually a friend, Bill, came forward. He wanted a companion for his 20-month-old daughter, as well as a watchdog. They all agreed, and off the pup went.

A couple of weeks later, Bill called to report on his wondrous new dog. His little girl had wandered off. He heard wild barking. He ran toward the sound and found his new dog firmly planted between his child and the banks of a pond. The dog was doing her best to stop the little girl, blocking her path while barking in protest. Bill got to his daughter in time and is now convinced that he owns the smartest, best dog in the world—although he would prefer it if she barked more!
